Well, hello Autumn. Welcome. Your dark dawns and permeating chill remind me that my complicated relationship with Summer is now over. Now, don’t misunderstand me — most of the time I love Summer, with her endless days and fevered nights and quiet, buzzing dawns. But, I must admit, Autumn: I prefer you more. You’re my intimate ending; I love your grey morning stillness, the weight of your storm-bruised clouds and the taste of your rain, the leaves you gather for me at my feet. I’m so very glad you’re here.
Anyways, seasonal eros aside, fall also means we’re all neck-deep in that (potentially awkward) transition period where it is too warm for sweaters some days, and too cold for short sleeves most days. Layering becomes key, my friends; and that’s when things get interesting. Now is the time to experiment with the vertical dimensions of your bodies; see what colour/pattern congruences or cacophonies please you. Right now, I’m pretty keen on this sheer black cardigan I’m wearing in this shoot — and certainly, while it provides little warmth, it’s a nice piece for those warmer fall days. I like the length, too; I’ve been seeing a lot of full-length cardigans around recently, which I think add an interesting and contrasting dimension to outfits with shorter or higher-waisted shorts and skirts.
I’d like to speak briefly to the style of this shoot, and the mastermind behind it: Kim Jay. I have to say, it’s always nice to experiment with styles that stray from my usual formula of graphic tees + high-waisted shorts + tights. For this shoot, Kim took the creative lead; she wanted to try for an art-fashion look, playing with the appearance of black and white clothing as seen through glass surfaces. The results are fantastic; the photos have an introspective, minimalist, and sophisticated appeal to them — and I certainly don’t consider myself an inherently sophisticated person. Kim is extremely talented at capturing a mood and style.
More stuff coming soon… I have a special plan for my followers/fellow creatures in this season of All Hallows’ Eve (another one of Autumn’s finest attributes). The witching hour is near, my friends. Stay tuned. ☽○☾
Till next time,
– Style Raven
