This ensemble is from a shoot Kim and I did outside of Canoe Brewpub back in February. The sky was a muted grey, and the city smelt of chilled, wet asphalt. The Pacific Northwest gets a bad rap for being dark and wet in the winter, but I find there is a sedated, introspective beauty to it. And fashionably speaking, it makes for a powerful-yet-somber backdrop, one that can be fun to appeal to. There’s something about rain-slick cement and dripping wires and walls that goes well with patent leather — and with over-sized boots and metal accents, for that matter. But what do I really love about dressing to these grey-days? It’s an adequate excuse to mimic the rain-bruised clouds and don various shades of black (which I do nearly everyday, anyways).

Vegan leather jacket: Reunion Boutique | Graphic tee: Flavour | White patent Doc Martens: Heart’s Content Victoria | Spiked headband: Romwe | Leg garter: Karmaloop | Beanie: Kamali Moon, by Jawbreaking

Many of these pieces are from local boutiques right here in town. If there’s anyone out there who has yet to check out Heart’s Content in Fan Tan Alley, please do so — the shopkeepers are incredible people, and it’s a great little pocket of fashion subculture in Victoria. Plus, they carry Lip Service, a unique line of punk apparel.

And now, in closing, some words from the avant-garde Japanese fashion designer, Yohji Yamamoto, on the enigmatic and paradoxical power of my favourite “colour”:

Till next time,
